New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump on Thursday to discuss ongoing trade negotiations and to congratulate him on the successful Gaza peace deal.
Sharing details of the conversation on X, PM Modi said both leaders reviewed progress on bilateral trade talks and agreed to remain in close contact in the coming weeks. “Spoke to my friend, President Trump, and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan. Also reviewed the good progress achieved in trade negotiations. Agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks,” he posted.
This was the second phone call between the leaders in under a month, following Trump’s call to PM Modi on 17 September to wish him a happy birthday.
After speaking with Trump, PM Modi also called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a post on X, Modi wrote: “Called my friend, Prime Minister Netanyahu, to congratulate him on the progress made under President Trump’s Gaza peace plan. We welcome the agreement on the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. Reaffirmed that terrorism in any form or manifestation is unacceptable anywhere in the world.”
The new Gaza ceasefire, based on Trump’s 20-point peace plan, includes the release of 47 hostages held by Hamas 25 of whom are believed to be dead in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. It also ensures daily aid deliveries into Gaza and the phased return of displaced residents to northern areas, with Israeli troop withdrawals overseen by international guarantees reportedly supported by Trump.
The ceasefire is expected to come into effect within 24 hours of Israeli cabinet approval, with hostage releases scheduled to begin 72 hours later.
