Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the renewed initiative on June 5 from South Delhi, one of the 29 districts in four states where the scheme will be executed, as per sources in the Ministry
New Delhi: On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will relaunch the ambitious Aravalli Green Wall Project from South Delhi, one of the 29 districts across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat where the initiative will be implemented. Aimed at reviving India’s oldest mountain range, the project seeks to establish a continuous green corridor across the 700-kilometre-long Aravalli range, stretching from Delhi to Gujarat. The green belt is intended to act as a natural barrier against desertification, boost groundwater recharge, and restore degraded land across the Indo-Gangetic plains.
Chief Ministers from all four participating states will join the launch from different locations: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta from South Delhi, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini from Dadri, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel from Kheda, and Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma from Ramgarh. The renewed push will focus on restoring degraded forests, improving soil and moisture retention, and promoting the planting of native species. One thousand permanent nurseries will be established to support the initiative, while advanced technologies like satellite mapping and remote sensing will be used to monitor progress and ensure transparency. Funding will be sourced through existing schemes such as MNREGA, CAMPA, and the Green India Mission.
This phase of the Aravalli Green Wall builds on the original launch in March 2023, which targeted a 5-km buffer zone around the range. The expanded scope now includes deeper community involvement, with divisional forest officers tasked with engaging local bodies, NGOs, and panchayats. The project will also implement the Green Credit Programme to incentivize eco-restoration efforts. The Aravalli range, home to 22 wildlife sanctuaries, four tiger reserves (Ranthambore, Sariska, Ramgarh-Vishdhari, and Mukunda Hills), and the Keoladeo National Park, is a biodiversity hotspot. It also houses nearly 50 historic forts and is the origin point of several rivers like the Chambal and Luni. Of the 1.25 lakh hectares that make up the Aravalli landscape, 42,000 hectares are designated reserve forests, with terrain ranging from gentle ridges to the towering Guru Shikhar peak at 1,732 meters in Mount Abu, Rajasthan.
Further measures under the project include the development of safaris, nature parks, and trekking routes, removal of invasive species, replantation with native flora, and integration with water conservation initiatives such as Amrit Sarovars. The government also plans to involve eco-clubs and eco-task forces in awareness campaigns and plantation drives, and to establish a dedicated research and monitoring wing through institutions like the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).
Alongside the green wall initiative, Prime Minister Modi will also relaunch the popular ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, encouraging citizens to plant trees in honour of their mothers. The campaign, which saw the plantation of 80 crore saplings last year, aims to deepen public engagement with environmental conservation and inspire individual action to combat climate change. Together, these efforts represent a comprehensive push by the government to restore ecological balance, preserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable development in one of India’s most critical natural landscapes.
