New Delhi: In a significant political maneuver, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thrown his weight behind the newly formed AIADMK-BJP alliance in Tamil Nadu, vowing to unseat the ruling DMK government. This move is pivotal for both parties, as the AIADMK rejoins the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) following a brief separation. PM Modi’s optimism stems from the potential synergies between the AIADMK’s local stronghold and the BJP’s national influence, aiming to propel Tamil Nadu to greater heights of prosperity and preserve its cultural uniqueness.
On April 12, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm about the AIADMK’s decision to join the NDA. He emphasized that the combined efforts of the NDA partners will elevate Tamil Nadu’s progress, mirroring the visions of the state’s late leaders, MGR and Jayalalithaa. Modi underscored the importance of removing the DMK government, which he characterizes as corrupt and divisive, to ensure the state’s progress and cultural preservation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the AIADMK, BJP, and other alliance parties will contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections under the NDA banner. This alliance is crucial for the BJP, as it seeks to improve its electoral performance in Tamil Nadu after failing to secure a single seat in the last Lok Sabha elections. The AIADMK, which has struggled in recent polls, sees this partnership as a strategic move to regain political momentum.
The AIADMK first allied with the BJP following J Jayalalithaa’s passing in 2016. The partnership showed promise in the 2021 state elections, where the BJP won four seats, but it was short-lived. The AIADMK severed ties with the BJP in 2023 due to internal conflicts and pending mutual distrust. The recent reconciliation marks an important political realignment ahead of the 2026 elections, with both parties focusing on challenging the dominant DMK government.
