New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday welcomed the agreement marking the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, describing it as an important step toward stability in the region. He praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his leadership in facilitating the deal.
In a post on X, Modi said, “We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This also reflects the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu.” He added, “We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring them relief and pave the way for lasting peace.”
The agreement, reached through indirect talks in Egypt, comes just after the second anniversary of Hamas militants’ cross-border attack that triggered Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The accord, forming the first stage of Trump’s 20-point framework, aims to halt the ongoing conflict, facilitate humanitarian relief, and arrange a hostage-prisoner exchange.
Israeli officials said the deal includes an Israeli withdrawal from parts of Gaza, while Hamas confirmed it would end hostilities and commit to a prisoner exchange. The Palestinian group also emphasised that their national rights would remain central to any long-term solution.
The war has left over 67,000 people dead and caused extensive destruction across Gaza. Israeli sources reported that of the 251 hostages taken during the conflict, around 20 remain alive.
Modi’s message underscores India’s support for diplomatic solutions and humanitarian relief, expressing hope that the ceasefire and the release of hostages will provide respite for civilians and contribute to a sustainable path toward peace in the region.
