New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make history on Wednesday as he embarks on the first-ever official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia. The landmark trip signals a deepening of ties between India and Europe, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) describing it as a reflection of India’s commitment to building stronger partnerships with European nations in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
During the visit, PM Modi will hold high-level bilateral talks with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and meet President Zoran Milanović. Strengthening diplomatic and strategic ties will be at the heart of these discussions, with a strong emphasis on cooperation in agriculture, technology, education, and culture. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit the Homeland Memorial in Zagreb, a symbolic gesture of respect for Croatia’s national history. In addition, he will take a walk through the capital city, engaging directly with citizens to further cultural connection.
Ambassador of India to Croatia, Arun Goel, confirmed that four significant agreements will be signed during the visit. These include a bilateral agreement on agriculture and allied activities, a cooperative programme in science and technology, an extension of the cultural exchange programme for another five years, and the continuation of the Hindi Chair at the University of Zagreb. Goel said these agreements mark the beginning of a new trajectory in India-Croatia relations, with potential for more areas of cooperation to emerge in the future.
India is expected to showcase opportunities in key sectors such as space-based applications, telecom, digital technologies, infrastructure, and healthcare. Ambassador Goel emphasized that these areas present significant value for Croatia and align with India’s vision to support development in the Indo-Pacific region. In the current global scenario marked by geopolitical uncertainty, Croatia is actively seeking new partnerships, and India is seen as a strong, stable ally.
Goel also highlighted the cultural bond shared by both countries, stating that the Croatian people have long admired Indian culture, spirituality, and traditions. This cultural affinity has created a foundation of goodwill, which the Prime Minister’s visit will help strengthen further.
The ambassador noted that Croatia closely followed India’s response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 tourists, and Operation Sindoor that followed. He said Croatia appreciated India’s measured and strategic military response and that public sentiment in the country strongly supports India’s firm stand against terrorism. “Croatia itself has faced terrorism and extremism, so there is deep understanding and empathy. I received numerous messages from Croatians after the Pahalgam attack. People here strongly support India’s approach,” Goel said.
This visit is not just a symbolic gesture but a clear diplomatic signal that India is expanding its global outreach and redefining its partnerships beyond traditional power blocs. It also reinforces India’s growing presence in the European strategic framework. With a strong political foundation and expanding areas of cooperation, PM Modi’s Croatia visit is expected to set the stage for a long-term and mutually beneficial relationship between the two nations.
