New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to Navy personnel on the occasion of Navy Day, acknowledging the force’s growing capabilities and its vital role in safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers. Navy Day is observed every year on December 4 to honour the Indian Navy’s contributions to national security and to commemorate its decisive action during the 1971 war under Operation Trident, when Indian forces sank multiple Pakistani vessels.
In his message, the Prime Minister described the Navy as a symbol of courage and determination, noting its strong focus on modernisation and self-reliance. He said these advancements have significantly strengthened the nation’s security framework. He also recalled spending Diwali with naval personnel aboard the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, describing the experience as memorable.
Through a video address, the Prime Minister underscored the Navy’s role in protecting both territorial waters and the nation’s maritime economic interests. He highlighted the force’s expanding capabilities across offshore patrol vessels, submarines and aircraft carriers, adding that its strength is increasing rapidly. He emphasised that India has always used its capabilities for global stability and humanitarian purposes. As global trade and national growth depend heavily on secure sea routes, he said the Navy continues to play a critical part in maintaining maritime order.
As part of this year’s Navy Day celebrations, the Indian Navy presented a large-scale operational demonstration off the Thiruvananthapuram coast in Kerala. The display showcased the force’s readiness across air, surface and subsurface domains. President Droupadi Murmu viewed the event from Shangumugham Beach.
The demonstration featured 19 major warships, including the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, along with a submarine, fast intervention vessels and 32 aircraft ranging from fighter jets to surveillance planes and helicopters. The event highlighted the Navy’s expanding operational reach and its preparedness to respond to evolving security challenges.
