SIRSAIM: A leisure trip turned tragic after a police constable drowned while swimming in a quarry at Sirsaim.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Akash Suresh Naik, was attached to the Porvorim Police Station and had recently been posted to Calangute.
He had gone to the site with eight friends when the incident occurred around 6 pm.
According to reports, Naik was swimming in the rain-filled quarry a spot often frequented by locals despite known dangers when he suddenly disappeared beneath the water.
His companions immediately alerted emergency services, following which a team from the Mapusa Fire Station arrived at the scene.
Naik was pulled out and rushed to the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa, where he was declared brought dead.
Colvale Police have registered an unnatural death case.
“Preliminary information indicates that the constable drowned while bathing in the quarry. Further investigation is underway,” said a police official.
