VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Tuesday condemned the assault on police personnel near Kingston Plaza and said he had given the police a free hand to investigate the case and take strict action against those involved.
Speaking to reporters, Salkar said he was unaware of the incident when it occurred but immediately instructed police authorities once he was informed. “The incident is shameful and I condemn such incidents. I was not aware of what actually happened on the site, but as soon as I was informed, I directed the Police Inspector and DySP to carry out a free-hand investigation and take necessary action without sparing the culprits. I am very straightforward and our Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant also does not tolerate issues pertaining to law and order. That is why I have given a free hand to the police force for the last three years to take action and control crimes in Vasco,” he said.
Salkar said the government would not interfere in the investigation. “No one from the government side will interfere when it comes to law and order because we are very much concerned about the safety of the people. The police are here to protect us and no one can tolerate the fact that they are being attacked. No one will support the criminals in such cases. I got to know about the incident at around 6 am and I have directed the police not to spare anyone, no matter who it is. The culprits have to be arrested and the police have to take action in their style,” said Salkar.
The MLA also dismissed Congress allegations that law and order in Vasco had collapsed. “I don’t want to comment much on Congress claims because they always need an excuse to talk when they cannot find any other issue. I have full faith in the police and I am sure they will carry out a proper investigation and take necessary action in this case,” he added.
Salkar maintained that Vasco has seen consistent police efforts to curb crime. “We have had several meetings with the PI and DySP in the past and we have extended every support to ensure there is no crime in Vasco. I have made it clear that no matter who the person is or what political affiliation he has, the accused have to be booked and strong action must follow. We have never compromised on law and order in the last three years of my tenure as MLA, and this is why Vasco Police Station was awarded the best police station recently. This is an unfortunate incident and I condemn it totally,” said Salkar.
