COLVALE: Police investigating the smuggling of nearly 1.4 kg of suspected ganja into Colvale jail have recovered a SIM card from the prison cell of inmate Manthan Chari.
According to sources, while the mobile phone allegedly used by Chari to coordinate the smuggling was disposed of before it could be seized, officers managed to find the SIM card, which will be key evidence in the investigation.
Chari was arrested on June 27 after three men — Gautam Talwar, Samuel Pujari, and Jafar Mulla — reportedly named him during police interrogation. Investigators suspect Chari directed the group by phone to deliver drugs into the prison.
The case originated on June 14, when prison staff discovered seven tightly packed balls containing a greenish leafy and flowery substance with fruiting tops, suspected to be ganja, weighing 1.397 kg and estimated to be worth ₹1.4 lakh.
Using CCTV footage from the jail and nearby areas, along with other technical leads, police identified and apprehended the three accused, who were later remanded to five days in police custody as the probe continues.
