PANAJI: A sharp political spat has erupted in Goa following statements by Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas claiming that RSS swayamsevaks had no role in India’s freedom movement.
BJP Goa President Damu Naik strongly condemned Viegas’ remarks, calling them a “poor understanding of history” and “misleading.” He stressed that public representatives should read, research, and know the facts before making irresponsible statements. Naik also challenged AAP Goa leaders to hold a debate with Arvind Kejriwal, pointing out that Kejriwal himself has publicly acknowledged links with the RSS.
Responding, AAP Goa President Valmiki Naik said the party is ready to debate the matter and has invited Damu Naik for an open discussion on the RSS. AAP MLA Capt Venzy Viegas meanwhile demanded that the BJP apologise first for the Arpora tragedy, defended his remarks on the RSS, and accused the BJP-led government of failing to uphold the spirit of Vande Mataram, protect Goa’s natural resources, and control crime and corruption.
Commenting on Viegas’ statement, the Chief Minister said the MLA appears unaware of the nation’s history and should first understand what the RSS is before making such claims, implying that the remarks were politically motivated.
The controversy highlights growing tensions between BJP and AAP in Goa, with both sides trading accusations over history, governance, and political responsibility.
