New Delhi: The Election Commission has issued firm directions to senior administrative and police officials in West Bengal to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a completely free, fair and transparent manner. During a high level review meeting, officials across the state were instructed to guarantee that voters are able to exercise their democratic rights without fear, pressure or interference.
Top authorities including the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Kolkata Police Commissioner, divisional commissioners, senior police officers and district magistrates were directed to maintain strict vigilance throughout the polling process. The Commission emphasised that the election environment must remain free from violence, intimidation and inducements. It also made it clear that practices such as bogus voting, booth capturing or obstruction of polling operations will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
To strengthen security arrangements, a large number of central armed police personnel will remain deployed in the state even beyond the day of counting. Around 500 companies of central forces will stay stationed in West Bengal after votes are counted on May 4. The state will vote in two phases scheduled for April 23 and April 29.
In addition, about 200 companies of central armed forces will specifically guard electronic voting machines, strong rooms and counting centres until the counting process concludes. Each company typically includes between ninety and one hundred twenty five personnel. Authorities said these precautions were taken in view of past incidents of unrest, particularly the violence reported after earlier elections.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the gherao of judicial officers in Malda has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency. The officers were handling cases related to the Special Intensive Revision when the incident occurred. A team has already begun the probe and has been asked to submit a preliminary report directly to the Supreme Court.
The court had strongly criticised the state administration over the incident, calling the situation unacceptable and ordering an investigation by a central agency. The latest measures come as election authorities continue to closely monitor law enforcement preparedness ahead of the polls.
