PONDA: A tragic hit-and-run accident in Ponda has led to the death of a 69-year-old man, Prakash Verenkar, who succumbed to injuries after being struck by a white-colored auto rickshaw that fled the scene.
According to a complaint lodged by ASI Rohidas Bhomkar of Ponda Police Station, the incident occurred on June 14, 2025, at approximately 4:10 PM at Safa Masjid, Ponda. The driver of the white auto rickshaw is reported to have been driving recklessly from Khundepar towards Panaji, endangering human life and failing to exercise proper caution. As the vehicle reached Safa Masjid, it collided with an Ola electric scooter that was crossing the road.
The rider of the scooter, Prakash Verenkar, a resident of Bandora, Ponda, sustained grievous injuries and was immediately referred to SDH Ponda for medical treatment. However, due to the severity of his injuries, Verenkar was later shifted to GMC Bambolim for further treatment. Sadly, despite all efforts, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The driver of the white auto rickshaw fled the scene without providing medical assistance to the victim or informing the police, leaving behind the injured man. An inquest panchanama was conducted, and the body was referred for a post-mortem examination.
The post-mortem was carried out by the Police Surgeon, who confirmed the cause of death as “Damage to chest and lungs associated with fractures to the right tibia and fibula and injury to the spine, resulting from blunt force impact.”
The deceased’s body was later handed over to his family for final rites.
An investigation is underway under the supervision of PSI Ashish Velip of Ponda Police Station, who is working to identify the driver of the auto rickshaw responsible for this fatal incident.
Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the vehicle or the driver to come forward and assist with the investigation.
