PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has flagged widespread violations in the manufacture and sale of Ganesh idols, after laboratory tests confirmed the use of Plaster of Paris (PoP) in several samples collected from workshops and shops across multiple talukas.
Of the 207 idols inspected till August 21, results for 160 have been released. While 130 idols met the prescribed standards, 24 contained calcium sulphate (CaSO4) levels exceeding 10 per cent, establishing they were made of PoP instead of natural clay as mandated.
Mormugao accounted for the highest number of breaches with seven idols testing positive for PoP, followed by Pernem (4), Curchorem (3), Cuncolim (2) and one each in Panaji, Taleigao, Ponda, Quepem, Sattari, Merces and Old Goa. Results of the remaining 47 samples are still awaited, according to GSPCB Member Secretary Sanjeev Joglekar.
The surprise checks were carried out jointly with deputy collectors across talukas, during which samples were seized for testing. A previous round of inspections had already revealed PoP idols in Tiswadi (2), Quepem (2), Salcete (3), Pernem (4), Mormugao (4), Sattari (1) and Ponda (1).
Authorities have now been directed to initiate proceedings against erring artisans and traders in line with environmental norms. The Board’s latest crackdown comes after repeated warnings that PoP idols, being non-biodegradable, contaminate rivers and lakes during immersion.
Reiterating its appeal, the GSPCB urged artisans and devotees to opt for eco-friendly clay idols that naturally dissolve in water, thereby safeguarding Goa’s aquatic ecosystems.
