PANAJI: 77 people have been charged by Valpoi police with violence at Wednesday’s traditional Kalotsav celebration of Bhumika Temple in Poriem-Sattari, which injured about 40 people, including 15 police officers.
As investigations into the fights by two competing Mahajan groups, Majik and the Rane-Gaonkar, over rights to perform rituals at the temple continue, police have warned that the number of arrests could increase.
Following the management of the violent skirmishes, the Gawlan Kala festival was held on Thursday, while the customary Kalotsav was celebrated on Wednesday evening. A large police presence was present during the two festivities, staying on the scene all night.
The police were removed from the area on Friday morning since the temple grounds were once again peaceful and regular. However, Valpoi police are keeping an eye on the situation to make sure that the fights don’t happen again.
Bicholim DySP All those involved in the violence will face charges, according to Jivba Dalvi
