PERNEM: Large portion of the protective retaining wall of NH66 at Maple, Pernem collapsed today. Large boulders also came crashing on the road along with the wall.
Occupants of a moving car had narrow escape as the concrete portion of the tilting retaining wall stopped few inches above the car. Traffic flow on the road has been disrupted.
The road and the retaining wall posed danger due to washing off the mud during monsoon. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Eyebrows have been raised over the quality of the work carried out by the highway contractor.
It may be recalled that in July 2019, a similar incident had occurred here wherein 25-metre retaining wall and road had collapsed.
Congress President Amit Patkar said that they have been raising this serious issue for past 2 years and the insensitive BJP government is playing with the lives of Goans.
“Will CM Sawant book criminal case against the so called Son-in-law Contractor of BJP Government. I want to ask Union Minister Nitin Gadkari who will take the responsibility for killing many Goans on the same stretch of highway Bambolim to Patradevi due to poor & pathetic quality of construction.
“We demand immediate FIR to be filed on the contractor and blacklist such incapable, ineligible, inadequate Contractor & recover all damages,” he added
Goa forward Party (GFP) General Secretary Durgadas Kamat since the road was thrown was open for public we have been saying that sub standard work has been carried out from Guirim to Patradevi ( NH 66 ).
“This stretch requires audit and all those concerned with this project need to be taken to task,” said Kamat
