MARGAO: A 47-year-old Portuguese national was detained in South Goa on Tuesday after it was discovered that he had been residing in the country without valid travel documents. The arrest followed his appearance in court for an ongoing narcotics case.
The accused, Antonio Manuel Faria Ramos, a resident of Arambol in North Goa, was present before the Hon’ble District and Sessions Judge-2 and Additional Sessions Judge, Margao, in connection with NDPS Case No. NDPS/03/2020. During the court proceedings, Ramos failed to produce his passport and visa, raising concerns about his legal status in India.
Following a complaint filed by the Superintendent and Head Clerk of the Sessions Court, local authorities verified that Ramos had no valid passport or visa in his possession and was residing in Goa illegally.
He was promptly taken into custody by the Investigating Officer, PSI Pratik Garudi, and has been booked under Section 7(1) and 7(3) of the Foreigners Order, 1948, as well as Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946, which deal with the failure to produce documents and illegal stay in India.
Authorities are expected to initiate deportation proceedings following due process. Meanwhile, his status in the NDPS case remains under judicial scrutiny.
This incident underscores growing concerns among law enforcement agencies regarding foreign nationals overstaying in Goa, often linked to tourism or criminal activity. Officials have reiterated the importance of maintaining valid documentation while staying in the country.
