PANAJI: The Department of Tourism, Goa, along with local representatives from Porvorim, organised a grand and dignified celebration of ShivJayanti at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk on February 19, 2026.
The event featured cultural performances, floral tributes and inspiring addresses by dignitaries. The gathering also acknowledged the initiative of Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte in facilitating the development and upkeep of the statue site, ensuring it remains a landmark symbolising heritage, valour and cultural identity.
Among those present were Kedar J. Naik, MLA of Saligao Constituency and Chairman of Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC); Amit Asnodkar (ZP, Socorro Constituency); Sandeep Salgaonkar (ZP, Penha de França); Swapnil Chodankar (Sarpanch, Penha de França Panchayat); Sonia Sanjay Pednekar (Sarpanch, Socorro Panchayat); and Kuldeep Arolkar, Managing Director, GTDC, along with panchayat members and local residents.
In his address, Kedar J. Naik reflected on the historical significance of Shivaji Maharaj’s rule, stating that he was not only a brave warrior but also a compassionate ruler who prioritised the welfare of his people. He highlighted that Shivaji Maharaj’s administrative foresight and inclusive governance remain relevant even today.
The celebration commenced with traditional dhol-tasha performances, creating an atmosphere of pride and reverence. Students presented a Powada narrating episodes from Shivaji Maharaj’s life, evoking admiration for his valour, administrative acumen and commitment to justice.
As part of the formal ceremony, the Chairman and Managing Director of GTDC, along with other dignitaries, offered floral tributes at the statue of Shivaji Maharaj in Porvorim.
Concluding the event, Kuldeep Arolkar proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to participants and attendees. He noted that the enthusiastic participation of students and citizens reflected the deep respect Shivaji Maharaj commands across communities.
The celebration reaffirmed Goa’s commitment to preserving and promoting the legacy of national icons while fostering cultural pride and historical awareness.
