Porvorim: Porvorim Police Station has intensified its action against open consumption of alcohol and related public nuisance following a rise in complaints from residents across the area. Police said that incidents of drinking in open public places and causing disturbance have been increasing, prompting stricter enforcement measures. Till date, the police have booked 147 cases and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on each violator under relevant provisions of the Goa Tourism Act.
Police clarified that no specific wine shop or establishment has been targeted and that action is being taken solely to curb the growing menace of nuisance caused by public drinking. Recently, residents of Socorro approached the police stating that open drinking in certain areas has created fear among women and minor children, as intoxicated persons loitering on roads were allegedly causing disturbances.
