Karmalghat: A postal delivery van en route from Margao to Canacona got stuck in loose soil at the top of Karmalghat early Wednesday morning, briefly delaying mail delivery before a passing motorist came to the rescue.
The van, bearing registration number GA-07 G 2382, got trapped in the soft, unstable soil—commonly referred to as shelimati—which had been used by the PWD (National Highways) contractor to fill the newly widened stretch of NH66 atop Karmalghat. The incident occurred as the van was descending the ghat toward Canacona Post Office.
Unable to move the vehicle, the driver promptly informed his superiors and awaited crane assistance. However, before official help could arrive, a good Samaritan passing by noticed the stranded van, stopped to check, and offered assistance. With the help of a rope and his own vehicle, the motorist managed to pull the van out of the mud.
Thanks to this timely intervention, the delivery van was freed, and postal deliveries to Canacona were completed without major delay.
The incident has once again raised questions about road safety and quality of temporary repairs on the crucial Karmalghat stretch of NH66.
