Margao: Even as common households in Goa face the threat of electricity disconnections for delayed bill payments, powerful defaulters continue to escape accountability, alleged Madganvcho Awaaz and youth leader Prabhav Naik.
Naik said that before snapping power connections of struggling families, Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar must first ensure the recovery of massive arrears from defaulting government departments, commercial establishments and large industries.
“This selective enforcement exposes a clear bias in the system, where the powerless are penalised while the powerful are protected,” Naik stated. He termed it unjust and unacceptable that salaried families, daily wage earners and senior citizens are harassed for minor delays, while crores of rupees owed by influential entities remain unpaid without any consequences.
Citing information placed before the Goa Legislative Assembly in July 2025, Naik claimed that nearly ₹2,063 crore is pending from public services, commercial and industrial consumers over the last five years. “This data itself demolishes the argument that power utilities are under stress because of common domestic consumers,” he said.
He added that if even a fraction of these arrears were recovered efficiently, there would be no justification for aggressive action against ordinary citizens. “The government cannot follow a double standard policy of going soft on its own departments and big businesses, while being harsh on the aam aadmi,” Naik remarked.
Stressing that electricity is a basic necessity and not a privilege, Naik said governance must stand with the weak and not shield the strong. “Burdening helpless families while allowing the powerful to escape is neither good governance nor social justice. This approach must change immediately,” he demanded.
