PANAJI: Independent MLA from Sanguem Prasad Gaonkar today has resigned as Member of the Legislative Assembly.
Gaonkar has submitted his resignation to Legislative Secretary Namrata Ulman. Gaonkar is expected to join the Congress today evening.
“I have resigned as MLA and i will join the Congress party; will form a new group and take Congress to new heights; i could have joined any other party but i did not do it; we want to serve the people of Goa,” said Gaonkar after resigning as MLA
He further said that he will contest on a Congress ticket and the party has assured me a ticket.
“Congress will form the next government in Goa. I have spoken to senior party and even local party functionaries. They have assured me of giving the Congress ticket.” said Gaonkar
He said that there is no confusion in Congress anymore. “We can move ahead in Congress with a single leader,” he said.
“I will mostly join Congress today but if for some reasons it might get delayed tomorrow,” he added
Recently, a delegation of Congress workers from Sanguem constituency had called on leader of opposition Digambar Kamat at his Margao residence and expressed their displeasure over moves to induct Sanguem independent MLA Prasad Gaonkar into Congress with a view to giving him the party ticket.
They handed over a memorandum expressing their objections.
Gaonkar, who is a first-time MLA representing the Sanguem constituency had begun this term by supporting the BJP, but later withdrew his support after former Goa CM Manohar Parrikar fell ill and remained an independent MLA largely supporting opposition causes during his tenure.
