Zuarinagar: Empowering Women and Children through Safety and Protection was held on 23rd October 2024 at the Multi-Purpose Cyclone Shelter in South Goa, gathering law enforcement, social workers, and community members from Zuarinagar to promote safety and protection for vulnerable groups. Organized by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, South Goa, in collaboration with the Social Work Programme of the D. D. Kosambi School of Social Sciences, Goa University, and supported by the AHTU, Margao, and Verna Police Station, the programme was coordinated by Divya Kerkar and Bhupali Gaonkar, dedicated students of the Social Work Programme.
The event opened with remarks from Salim Shaikh, Sub Divisional Police Officer, Mormugao, who stressed the importance of community-police partnerships in ensuring safer neighborhoods. His address encouraged the community to view law enforcement as active allies in fostering security.
Girish Mardolkar, Head Constable led an insightful session on “Traffic Awareness for Safer Communities,” covering topics like road safety, pedestrian rights, and responsible driving habits. Police Inspector Sudiksha Naik, AHTU, Margao, provided a practical talk on “Ensuring Safety and Protection for Women and Children,” advising the audience on recognizing signs of abuse and the steps involved in reporting. Her session empowered participants with actionable tools for enhancing neighborhood safety. Assistant Professor Peter F. Borges of Goa University conducted a key session on “Child Safety and Protection,” highlighting preventive measures against abuse and exploitation. His emphasis on community responsibility in child protection inspired attendees to engage actively in safeguarding children in their communities. Eddie Fernandes also addressed the gathering, encouraging grassroots involvement and emphasizing the power of community support in protecting vulnerable populations. His insights reinforced the collaborative spirit that Prayaas stands for.
The programme also saw the presence of Melson Colaco, Police Inspector, Verna Police Station, whose support further underscored the commitment of law enforcement to this important initiative. The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where community members engaged with police officials, sharing their concerns and seeking valuable guidance. This open dialogue fostered a trusting atmosphere, empowering participants to take proactive steps in ensuring community safety.
