New Delhi: Being part of a World Cup winning squad without getting regular playing time can test any cricketer’s mindset. For Kuldeep Yadav, preparation and discipline proved to be the key factors that helped him remain motivated during ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Although Kuldeep was a member of India’s title winning squad that secured a historic third T20 World Cup crown, he spent most of the tournament on the bench, playing only one of the team’s eight matches. Despite limited opportunities, the left arm wrist spinner focused on staying ready through consistent practice and maintaining the right mindset.
Kuldeep explained that when a player is not part of the playing eleven, preparation becomes even more important. According to him, staying involved in training sessions and maintaining match readiness ensures that a player can perform whenever the opportunity arises.
The spinner said confidence naturally develops when preparation and routines remain consistent. While some nervousness is inevitable before matches, proper planning and practice help players deal with pressure and perform effectively.
Kuldeep also highlighted the importance of strategic planning against batters. He said bowlers constantly analyse how opponents look to score and adjust their approach accordingly, especially when facing unfamiliar players.
The Indian spinner has carried this approach into the 2026 Indian Premier League, where he represents Delhi Capitals. Despite the challenges bowlers face in the high scoring T20 format, Kuldeep believes spinners must remain committed to their strengths rather than switching to defensive tactics under pressure.
He emphasised that attacking intent is the identity of a wicket taking spinner and should not be abandoned even when batters attempt to dominate.
Looking ahead, Delhi Capitals are preparing for their upcoming match against Mumbai Indians in New Delhi. Kuldeep acknowledged the strength of Mumbai’s batting lineup, which includes players such as Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Tilak Varma.
However, he expressed confidence that Delhi Capitals can bounce back after a slow start to the season, stressing that a long tournament like the IPL leaves plenty of room for recovery and improvement.
