PANAJI: Scheduled Tribes in Goa will soon get political representation in the State Assembly, with President Droupadi Murmu giving her assent to the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of Goa Bill, 2025.
The legislation, which had earlier cleared both Houses of Parliament, will reserve four of the 40 Assembly seats for ST candidates — a first for the community, which until now had no reserved seats.
The law, enacted under Article 332 of the Constitution, mandates the Election Commission to redraw constituency boundaries to earmark the four ST-reserved seats. This exercise will be based on updated ST population figures to be declared by the Census Commissioner.
Officials said the measure is aimed at ensuring stronger democratic participation of the ST community in Goa’s political process, ending a decades-long wait for legislative representation.
