Wayanad:
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has affirmed her party’s full support for any decisive action the central government chooses to take in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 people dead. Speaking during her two-day visit to Wayanad, the AICC General Secretary reiterated the Congress Working Committee’s (CWC) resolution backing the government.
“The Congress Party, through the CWC, has passed a resolution stating that we stand fully with whatever action the government decides to take. We hope that action is taken soon,” she told reporters.
Her remarks come after the Congress party, in a high-level meeting chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, called on the Centre to respond firmly to the attack and hold Pakistan accountable for its ongoing support of cross-border terrorism. The CWC also demanded a time-bound investigation into lapses in security and intelligence, especially in a region known for heavy surveillance and deployment.
The meeting was attended by senior leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, K C Venugopal, and Priyanka herself.
During her visit to Sultan Bathery in Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi also handed over a new ambulance to forest officials of the Wayanad Wildlife Division. The ambulance, funded with ₹15 lakh from her MP Local Area Development Fund, is designated for treating injured and sick animals.
She later visited the animal hospice and palliative care unit, which houses captured aggressive tigers. Forest officials briefed her on the challenges of overcrowding and the urgent need for additional infrastructure and financial support to manage the growing population of rescued wildlife.
However, her visit was marred by controversy as the family of former Wayanad DCC treasurer NM Vijayan, who died by suicide a few months ago, alleged they were prevented by local party leaders from meeting her. His daughter-in-law claimed the family received no assistance from the party, despite earlier assurances given by Priyanka during her previous visit.
