Valpoi: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has assured that the process to withdraw police cases filed in connection with last year’s unrest in Parye, Sattari, will begin within a month.
The assurance came after around 1,000 citizens staged a protest at Valpoi police station on Thursday, demanding the withdrawal of cases filed against 37 individuals.
The protest stems from tensions that flared between the Mahajans of the Sakhaleshwar and Bhumika Devasthan temples during religious rituals in December last year. The situation escalated into stone-pelting, clashes, and a blockade of the Goa-Belgaum highway, following early morning religious activities by one group.
In response to Thursday’s agitation, Poriem MLA Dr. Deviya Rane intervened and facilitated a dialogue between the protestors and the Chief Minister. A meeting was held in Panaji on Friday, where the CM gave a formal assurance to initiate the process for case withdrawal within a month.
A memorandum was also submitted to the Chief Minister by the protesting citizens. Following the government’s assurance, the agitation has been temporarily suspended.
MLA Dr. Deviya Rane, who was present at the meeting, confirmed the CM’s commitment and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the issue.
