Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant chaired a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday to review the proposal for the creation of a third district in Goa.
According to the Chief Minister, a government-notified committee has examined the proposal in detail, including aspects such as district boundaries, geography, demography, existing infrastructure, administrative feasibility, and the estimated financial implications.
He said that suggestions received from legislators, including the Leader of the Opposition and other Opposition MLAs, will also be taken into account.
Sawant said the consultative process reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive and transparent governance.
While acknowledging that the creation of a new district would involve an initial administrative and financial outlay, the Chief Minister said the long-term benefits would outweigh the costs.
He noted that a third district could improve access to central government funds and schemes, including opportunities under programmes such as the Aspirational District Programme.
He added that the proposed district would strengthen governance by enhancing administrative reach, ensuring faster delivery of public services, improving last-mile implementation of welfare schemes, and encouraging greater local participation in administration.
