New Delhi: A large protest took place outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi following the killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, triggering heightened security and diplomatic attention. The demonstration was organised to condemn the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das and to protest what participants described as continued violence against Hindus and damage to religious sites across the neighbouring country.
Security was significantly tightened in the Chanakyapuri area as protesters gathered near the diplomatic premises. Multiple layers of barricades were installed, and police along with paramilitary personnel were deployed to manage the crowd and prevent any breach of security. Despite these arrangements, some demonstrators were seen attempting to move past police barriers, with reports indicating that at least two layers of barricading were breached before authorities regained control.
Protesters carried banners and placards and raised slogans demanding justice for the victim and accountability for those responsible. Many participants expressed concern that silence could embolden further violence, with one demonstrator stating that failure to speak out would put others at similar risk. The protest remained tense but was contained without major escalation due to the strong security presence.
The demonstration followed the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 25 year old garment factory worker, who was lynched by a mob in Baluka area of Mymensingh district on December 19. His body was reportedly set on fire following allegations of blasphemy. Authorities in Bangladesh have since arrested at least twelve individuals in connection with the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
The protest in New Delhi came amid rising diplomatic sensitivities. Earlier the same day, Bangladesh raised concerns over incidents targeting its diplomatic facilities in India. The Bangladeshi government conveyed its objections through formal diplomatic channels, citing vandalism at the Bangladesh Visa Centre in Siliguri on December 22 and earlier protests outside the High Commission in New Delhi.
Bangladesh urged Indian authorities to ensure the safety and security of its diplomatic missions and personnel, calling for thorough investigations and preventive measures. The developments highlight growing tensions following the killing and underline the broader regional implications of the incident.
