Pune: In the wake of the tragic bridge collapse over the Indrayani River in Pune district on Sunday, the Maharashtra government has announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the four individuals who lost their lives. The incident, which occurred in the afternoon, led to 55 people falling into the river. According to Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, 51 individuals were successfully rescued, and 38 are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals. The condition of all the injured is reported to be stable. Tragically, four people lost their lives, and their identities have been confirmed. An aerial survey was conducted on Monday to ensure that no victims remained unaccounted for, and there are currently no reports of missing persons.
In response to the incident, the district administration has constituted a multi-departmental probe team under the leadership of the District Collector. This investigation committee includes officers from the Irrigation Department, Public Works Department (PWD), Forest Department, and the Police. The objective of the probe is to identify the cause of the collapse, uncover any lapses, and assess the effectiveness of existing safety protocols. Mr. Dudi emphasized the urgent need to review and strengthen standard operating procedures to prevent such incidents in the future.
To further enhance infrastructure safety, the Collector has ordered a structural audit of all old bridges in the region. He stressed that this assessment is critical to avoiding similar tragedies, especially during the monsoon season when such structures are more vulnerable. He also appealed to the public to refrain from visiting such locations during heavy rains due to heightened risks.
Earlier in the day, Maharashtra’s Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik chaired a high-level virtual meeting to review the situation and coordinate the government’s response. The meeting was attended by senior officials including the Additional Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, officers from the Rural Development Department, Divisional Commissioner of Pune, Pune District Collector, Public Works Department officials, and the Superintendent of Police. The discussions focused on relief efforts, infrastructure safety, and future preparedness.
The swift action by the state government, including financial relief, rescue operations, and a structural review, reflects a commitment to accountability and public safety in the aftermath of the tragedy.
