New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin reflected on his recent visit to India, praising the nation’s “unity in diversity” and its rich cultural heritage. Speaking on Wednesday, he noted that while around 500–600 million Indians speak Hindi, the rest of the population communicates in numerous other languages, often making mutual understanding a challenge. Putin emphasized that preserving unity amidst such diversity is a shared principle both nations must uphold.
The remarks followed a high-profile two-day visit to New Delhi, where Putin held extensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit underscored the depth of India-Russia friendship, reaffirming decades of cooperation even amid shifting global dynamics. It coincided with a period of heightened economic tension, as the United States recently imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian purchases of Russian oil.
During his visit, Putin received a ceremonial welcome at Palam airport, complete with a red-carpet reception and a full guard of honour. The leaders discussed defence collaboration, energy partnerships, trade expansion, and other pressing geopolitical issues. As part of ongoing bilateral initiatives, Putin invited Prime Minister Modi to visit Russia in 2026 for the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit. The two leaders also welcomed the opening of Indian Consulates General in Yekaterinburg and Kazan, aiming to strengthen regional cooperation, trade links, and people-to-people interactions.
