NAVELIM: Inspection of accident-prone Navelim-Kochi national highway at Calvados by-pass Navelim was held in the presence of locals and the traffic police.
Locals were upset as the other concerned authorities missed this road inspection. Locals feel that government authorities should be blamed for their non-cooperation if someone loses his life on this road.
Primary complainant Ashish Kamat told the media that the road stretch at Calvados had turned into a death trap, and to resolve this issue Deputy Collector has called for an inspection of this road on Monday afternoon.
Multiple departmental officials were called by the Deputy collector during the inspection. Only the Traffic inspector, electricity engineer, PWD engineer were present on time, but unfortunately, the PWD highway authorities did not turn up at the site inspection. Only a consultant has been deployed to attend to us.
Kamat further alleged that the government authorities are simply passing the bug to each other, and these authorities are least bothered about the innocent lives of the Goans.
“The Christmas festivities will start now and the traffic movement from this stretch will also increase multiple folds,” he said.
He also said that he will again make a complaint letter and expect the Collector to physically come for the inspection next time since some authorities today didn’t come to the inspection.
A local said there is a need to implement a proper safe road map by the PWD engineers and the highway roads consultant. Merely tarring of the road will not make it safe for the commuters. He further opined that the govt authorities, officers are not cooperative and supportive in public welfare. If any accidents or loss of life occurs on this road, the concerned authorities will be blamed.
Gautam Salunke, Traffic inspector Margao, said that the Deputy Collector had called for an inspection at Belle junction after some citizens wrote about the accident-prone road stretch and road safety.
“For almost a year, we have been following up on this issue; several meetings have taken place on this issue with the concerned authorities. It was decided to implement certain measures to make this road safe, but sadly nothing has happened. We have done our correspondence with the other concerned authorities,” he said.
