New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, arrived at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday to participate in a high-level meeting for the selection of the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), sources have confirmed.
The selection panel responsible for appointing the CBI chief comprises Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. As per established norms, the CBI Director is appointed for a fixed tenure of two years, which can be extended up to five years under special circumstances.
The current CBI Director, Praveen Sood, is scheduled to retire on May 25. A 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre, Mr. Sood assumed charge of the premier investigative agency in May 2023, succeeding Subodh Kumar Jaiswal.
Today’s meeting is expected to finalize the name of Mr. Sood’s successor, a decision that carries significant implications for the direction of the agency at a time of heightened political and legal activity in the country.
