New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday explained why India did not immediately respond to the United States’ decision to impose steep tariffs on Indian exports.
Earlier, Washington had announced a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, including a 25 per cent penalty over New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
Speaking during an interaction with the Indian community in Morocco, where he is on a two-day official visit, Singh said India chose to act with restraint.
“We did not respond right away. Those who are broad-minded and big-hearted do not react immediately,” he said.
Singh’s remarks come as trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington continue to draw global attention, with India expected to calibrate its next steps carefully to protect economic and strategic interests.
