New Delhi: During his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh issued a strong statement calling for international oversight of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. Addressing soldiers in Srinagar on Thursday, Singh raised concerns about the safety of nuclear weapons in the hands of what he described as a “rogue and irresponsible nation.”
“From the soil of Srinagar, I want to ask the entire world — are nuclear weapons safe in the hands of such an irresponsible and rogue nation?” Singh said. He urged that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal be placed under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), emphasizing global responsibility in preventing misuse of nuclear technology.
Singh’s remarks came just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned Pakistan’s repeated “nuclear blackmail” and declared India’s firm stance against terrorism. Referring to these threats, Singh noted that “India’s strength lies in its resolve. We have not cowered before their nuclear threats, and the world has seen their recklessness in this regard.”
Amid speculation about a possible nuclear radiation leak at Pakistan’s Kirana Hills following an alleged Indian strike, the Indian military clarified it had not targeted any nuclear facility. Air Marshal AK Bharti remarked, “We were told that Pakistan has stored nuclear weapons in Kirana Hills. But we did not target that area. It wasn’t on our list of designated targets.”
Singh also praised the recently concluded Operation Sindoor, calling it India’s largest counter-terrorism operation to date. The mission, which lasted from May 7 to May 10, was launched in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. “This operation demonstrated India’s commitment to rooting out terrorism,” Singh said. “Terrorists attacked tourists in Pahalgam, trying to break India’s unity. But our forces responded with unwavering precision and resolve.”
He warned terrorist groups and their handlers across the border that they are “no longer safe anywhere,” stating that Indian forces now have them in their crosshairs. “Our message is clear — India will no longer tolerate any attack on its sovereignty or dignity,” he said.
Through these statements, Singh reinforced India’s commitment to both national security and global nuclear safety, signaling a firm message to the international community regarding Pakistan’s nuclear posture.
