PANAJI: RC Goa and Sun Estate Warriors opened their account in the PGML 5.0 cricket tournament with confident victories on Sunday at the Panaji Gymkhana ground in Campal, Panaji. Both teams bounced back strongly after defeats in their opening fixtures, registering morale boosting wins in contrasting but controlled run chases.
In the morning encounter, RC Goa produced a dominant performance to defeat Priority Titans by six wickets. After winning the toss, Priority Titans opted to bat first but struggled to build momentum, finishing on 106 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. A few middle order contributions helped them cross the 100 run mark, but disciplined bowling from RC Goa kept the scoring in check throughout the innings.
Chasing a modest target, RC Goa wasted no time asserting control. The chase was effectively sealed by skipper Rajshekhar Harikant, who played an explosive unbeaten innings of 55 runs from just 19 deliveries. His knock, studded with seven sixes and a boundary, completely dismantled the Titans’ bowling attack. Supported well by the top order, RC Goa raced to 111 for 4 in only 10.5 overs, showcasing a sharp rise in intent and execution.
The second match of the day followed a similar low scoring pattern. Baale Tigers chose to bat first but were unable to capitalize on the decision, being bowled out for 115 in 19 overs. A couple of steady knocks helped them reach a defendable total, but regular wickets prevented any late surge.
Sun Estate Warriors approached the chase with composure. Abhijit Bhandare anchored the innings with a fluent 51 off 30 balls, striking five fours and two sixes. Mithun Govekar provided valuable support before retiring out, ensuring the chase stayed on track. The Warriors reached 116 for 5 in 15 overs to clinch a five wicket victory.
The twin wins marked a significant turnaround for both RC Goa and Sun Estate Warriors, injecting fresh momentum into their PGML 5.0 campaigns as the tournament continues to build intensity.
