PANAJI: The Panaji JMFC Court on Friday remanded all eight accused, including Zenito Cardozo, in the Rama Kankonkar assault case to 14 days of judicial custody.
The police had sought further custody of the accused to recover the vehicle allegedly used by the accused from Nuvem, the knife reportedly shown to complainant Soiru Velip, and certain mobile phones suspected to be linked to the crime.
However, the Court observed that police custody cannot be extended solely for the purpose of recoveries.
At the same time, it clarified that custody can be sought again if new facts emerge or if there is a change in circumstances.
The accused were arrested in connection with the attack on social activist Rama Kankonkar earlier this month, which triggered protests and political reactions across the State.
The case has since drawn wide public attention with demands for strict action against the perpetrators.
