BENAULIM: A strong focus on sustainable fishing and community-led conservation marked the celebration of Rampon Day at Benaulim, inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and organised by Niz Ramponkarancho Ekvott.
Speaking on the occasion, CM Sawant underlined that Rampon fishing is not merely a livelihood but a model of eco-friendly fishing rooted in collective effort and traditional wisdom. He said the practice reflects how coastal communities have protected marine resources while earning their living for generations.
“Ramponkars represent teamwork, sustainability, and deep respect for the sea—values that have shaped Goa for generations,” the Chief Minister said, adding that such traditional systems are increasingly relevant at a time when marine ecosystems face pressure.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the Government of Goa remains committed to safeguarding Rampon fishing as a living heritage, while ensuring welfare and livelihood support for fishermen. He noted that preserving traditional fishing practices is essential to maintaining the balance between development and environmental protection along Goa’s coastline.
Extending his greetings, CM Sawant said, “My best wishes to all Ramponkars on this special day. May the sea remain generous and your Rampons always return full.”
The celebration brought together Ramponkars, community leaders and locals, reinforcing the role of traditional fishing practices in Goa’s cultural identity and sustainable future.
