New Delhi: The extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a key figure accused of planning the devastating 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, marks a pivotal moment in India’s pursuit of justice. As Rana faces extradition from the United States on a special flight, survivors of the attacks reflect on the gravity of his involvement. Devika Rotawan, who bravely identified terrorist Ajmal Kasab despite being shot during the assault, demands stern action: “Rana should be hanged for his role in the terror attacks,” she affirms.
Rana, originally from Pakistan, has been linked to the banned terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence. His extradition to India comes after years of legal battles, culminating in a significant diplomatic victory for India. Once in India, Rana will be presented before a Delhi court before being transferred to Mumbai. This move is expected to uncover more information about co-conspirators involved in the attacks.
Devika Rotawan, now known for her courage during the 2008 attacks, was just nine years old when she was injured. She recalls the chaos of the night, including identifying Ajmal Kasab in court. “There was a loud explosion, and as we tried to escape, I saw two people firing at people. I received a bullet injury in my right leg,” she recounts. Her testimony underscores the trauma inflicted by such acts of terrorism.
The Mumbai terror attacks resulted in over 160 fatalities and left deep scars on the nation. Rana is accused of aiding David Headley, a significant figure in the plot, by setting up a front in Mumbai. He faces serious charges, including conspiracy, waging war against India, murder, forgery, and breaches under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His extradition is seen as a major step towards ensuring accountability for those involved in such heinous crimes.
