New Delhi: In a dramatic shift from decades of policy, the United States has engaged in unprecedented direct talks with Hamas, a move aimed at securing the release of American hostages held in Gaza. This bold diplomatic maneuver comes as President Donald Trump issues a stern warning to Hamas, demanding the immediate release of all hostages and bodies. The talks, facilitated by US special envoy Adam Boehler in Doha, mark a significant departure from the US tradition of not engaging with groups it designates as terrorist organizations.
The situation in Gaza remains tense, with a fragile ceasefire hanging in the balance. President Trump’s warning to Hamas is clear: comply with US demands, or face severe consequences. He has pledged to support Israel fully, ensuring that “not a single Hamas member will be safe” if the group fails to comply. This stance aligns with Trump’s broader proposal for Gaza, which includes the forced resettlement of its residents—a plan met with resistance from Arab nations.
The US-Hamas talks have focused not only on securing the release of American hostages but also on brokering a broader deal to end the war. Israel was consulted before these talks began, reflecting a coordinated approach to resolving the crisis. However, Israel has halted humanitarian aid to Gaza until Hamas meets its demands, including the complete demilitarization of the region. Hamas currently holds 24 living hostages and the bodies of others, despite recent releases. The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains uncertain, with disagreements over the next phase of the truce.
