CANACONA: The renovated and modernised Loliem crematorium—one of the oldest in the Canacona taluka—was inaugurated on Saturday by Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar. The project was executed at a cost of over ₹17–18 lakh, more than double the originally sanctioned tender amount of ₹7.5 lakh.
The crematorium, located in Loliem-Polem village, was upgraded through the efforts of panch and former sarpanch Ajay (Ajit) Lolienkar, who personally contributed to the funding of the renovation in memory of his late mother.
The inaugural function was held in the presence of village sarpanch Nisha Chari, former sarpanch Mohandas Lolienkar—under whose tenure the land was acquired and the crematorium originally constructed—panch members, and residents of the southernmost Goan village.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar urged villagers to make full use of the upgraded crematorium and avoid open cremations. “This crematorium was a visionary initiative by former sarpanch Mohandas Lolienkar and must be maintained and utilized by the community,” he said.
Recalling the genesis of the facility, Mohandas Lolienkar said the need for a designated cremation space arose due to landlessness among villagers, which often created disputes during funerals. “Though we provided the crematorium and firewood facilities, for years people avoided using it, making it a neglected structure. It is heartening to see its revival now,” he added.
Ajay Lolienkar shared that the panchayat had sanctioned ₹7.5 lakh for the renovation, but actual expenses crossed ₹17 lakh to achieve a comprehensive upgrade, including structural improvements and amenities.
Earlier, Sarpanch Nisha Chari welcomed the gathering, panch and ex-sarpanch Sachin Naik addressed the audience, while Deputy Sarpanch Ashutosh Bandekar proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Santosh Lolayekar, OSD to the Speaker.
