BICHOLIM: The Amthane Dam in Dicholi, a vital water storage and supply source in Goa, is on the verge of completing essential repairs to its underwater iron gate, which was built nearly 40 years ago. Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar stated that the repair work, undertaken on a war-footing basis, is expected to be finished by October 20, after which the dam will be filled to its full capacity. Currently, the reservoir is more than half full.
The underwater gate had deteriorated over time, creating operational challenges for the Water Resources Department. A contractor was appointed for its restoration, and the work has been progressing steadily. Once the repairs are complete, the dam will continue to supply water to the Asnoda Water Treatment Plant and support irrigation in the region.
Alongside Amthane, a major minor dam and barrage project is underway at Sal, including pumping stations at Sal and near Amthane. These are expected to be completed by March 2026, allowing large-scale transfer of water from Sal to Amthane to meet future demands.
Minister Shirodkar highlighted that these initiatives aim to ensure the dams are fully functional and ready to provide a reliable water supply for the state.
