BAMBOLIM: In a significant development for the medical fraternity in Goa, the Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) met with Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Sunday to press for enhanced remuneration, citing the crucial and relentless role resident doctors play in sustaining the state’s healthcare services.
The meeting, held at Goa Medical College (GMC), saw GARD representatives outline the long-standing demand for fair compensation in line with their workload and responsibilities. “Resident doctors are at the frontline of patient care, often working long hours under immense pressure. Our appeal is not just about pay—it’s about recognition and dignity,” said a GARD spokesperson after the meeting.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane acknowledged the merit of their demands and assured the delegation of his full support. “Their request is justified given their tireless efforts in serving Goa’s healthcare needs. I will take this up with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant to ensure our doctors are fairly supported,” Rane said.
The meeting comes amid ongoing assessments of the state’s healthcare preparedness, including vector-borne disease control. While Rane also chaired a broader review meeting with GMC officials on the same day, GARD’s demand emerged as a key issue highlighting the systemic need to support and retain medical talent in government healthcare.
Resident doctors expressed hope that the government would follow through with concrete measures, stressing that timely support could prevent burnout and brain drain from the public healthcare system.
