VASCO: Residents of New Vaddem have welcomed Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s announcement to legalize houses constructed on Communidade and government land, calling it a long-awaited relief for hundreds of families.
At a press conference, the residents expressed gratitude to the CM, saying this was the first time a government had genuinely considered their well-being, allowing them to proudly say “Mhaje Ghar.”
They urged Communidade bodies to extend full support to the Regularisation of Unauthorised Construction Amendment Bill, stressing that the move would benefit a large number of people who have been paying taxes despite their homes being tagged as illegal because the land was not in their names.
“The legalization and subsequent transfer of land will help us carry out partition and mutation procedures and also avail loans for repairs and renovations,” residents said.
They also thanked the Chicalim and Chicolna Communidades for supporting the bill and appealed to other Communidades across the State to adopt a similar approach in the interest of locals, many of whom have lived on such land for over 50 years, with houses built more than four decades ago.
Residents further requested that Communidades levy only nominal land rates and, where possible, allow installment-based payments for lower middle-class and poor families. They added that land ownership could be transferred once full payment is completed, ensuring security of tenure without burdening weaker sections financially.
