PANAJI: Indian Medical Association Medical Students Network (IMA MSN) of Goa Medical College announced the winners of the Empower! on 26 June 2024. The inter-college short film competition on women’s safety marked the culmination of a week-long event dedicated to creative expression and advocacy.
Vaishnavi Gaunkar and Riya Sharma from Goa Medical College secured the top honour with their film “Swaraksha,” a deeply resonant portrayal of empowerment and healing. The narrative skillfully navigated themes of confronting past traumas, emphasizing the competition’s central focus on women’s safety.
Following closely behind was Sohan Naik’s compelling entry from Goa Medical College, which earned the runner-up position for its exploration of societal responsibilities in addressing challenges faced by women.
Mario Pimenta, studying mass communication at Don Bosco College Panjim presented “Women Safety,” highlighting the need for societal change through a powerful narrative starting from the challenges faced by a newborn girl. Notably, this entry was the only one from a non-medical college, showcasing diverse perspectives in addressing women’s safety.
Chris Lawrence from Goa Dental College presented a film offering a poignant narrative of resilience against societal prejudices and personal challenges.
Yash from Goa Medical College contributed “Self-E'”, an introspective piece challenging societal norms and advocating for men’s education on respecting and supporting women.
These films, alongside other impactful entries, contributed to a diverse selection that showcased originality, creativity, and a commitment to advancing the dialogue on women’s safety. The competition, open to colleges across Goa, also awarded special recognition to the film with the highest audience engagement, underscoring community involvement in promoting awareness.
