New Delhi: Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has lauded Virat Kohli as one of India’s all-time greats in Test cricket, crediting the former skipper not only for his remarkable statistics but also for transforming the face of Indian cricket during his tenure.
Speaking on the latest episode of ICC Review, Ponting reflected on Kohli’s recent retirement from the longest format, following India’s failure to qualify for the upcoming World Test Championship final beginning June 11. This marks the first time India will miss out on the final, following a 0-3 home whitewash by New Zealand and a 1-3 defeat to Australia earlier this year.
Ponting acknowledged that although Kohli’s numbers had dipped in recent years, his overall impact remains immense.
“He’s got to be right up there as far as all-time greats are concerned. If we’re talking Indian cricketers, he’s certainly at the very top,” Ponting said.
Kohli, who announced his retirement during the early stages of IPL 2025, ended his Test career with 123 matches, scoring 9230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. He captained India in 68 Tests, leading the team to historic wins both at home and overseas.
Ponting also pointed out that Kohli’s career average once exceeded 50, but had slightly declined in the last three to four years. Despite that, he remains among the elite.
What sets Kohli apart, Ponting emphasized, is his ability to thrive under the intense pressure of leading India, something players from other cricketing nations might not fully grasp.
“The pressure Indian players deal with, day in and day out, is unlike anything players from Australia or England experience,” Ponting explained.
“To captain India for so long, to re-energise and almost rebrand Indian cricket with his aggressive style, fitness, and passion—that’s what he’ll also be remembered for.”
As Shubman Gill takes over as India’s new Test captain, Kohli bows out, leaving behind a legacy defined not just by runs, but by leadership, intensity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
