New Delhi: With the much-anticipated Test series between India and England around the corner, vice-captain Rishabh Pant has put an end to speculation over India’s middle-order composition by confirming that Shubman Gill will bat at No. 4, filling the crucial role left vacant after Virat Kohli’s retirement. Pant himself will follow at No. 5, bringing clarity to a batting order that had been under intense scrutiny.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Pant said, “I think there is still discussion going on about who is going to play No. 3. But 4 and 5 are definitely fixed. Shubman is going to bat at 4, and I’ll stick to No. 5 as of now. The rest will be decided as we go along.”
Pant also highlighted his strong off-field bond with Gill, saying that their friendship positively influences their on-field performance. “Me and Shubman have a really good camaraderie off the field. If you’re good friends off the field, it eventually shows on the field too. That’s something I’ve always believed,” he said. “We gel really well together, we keep having conversations, and the comfort zone we have with each other is going to be really special for us.”
As both teams prepare for the high-stakes series, England will be without legendary pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad, both of whom have retired. Pant admitted that their absence is a relief for the Indian batting lineup, especially considering the damage the pair have done to India in past tours.
“Definitely, it feels good when both Anderson and Broad are not there,” Pant said with a smile. “They’ve been a big part of England’s success for so many years. I’ve faced them on the last two tours, and it’s never easy. But at the same time, England still have enough ammunition in their bowling attack.”
However, Pant made it clear that India would not be underestimating their opponents. “We don’t want to take anyone lightly. Our team is young, still developing. We’ve got to play our brand of cricket and show respect to the bowlers and opposition where it’s due.”
With a settled middle-order and clear leadership on and off the field, India appears well-prepared for the challenge ahead. The first Test of the five-match series begins this Friday.
