PANAJI: In a bid to reduce rising road accidents in the state, Goa Traffic Cell today has come out with specific guidelines for Rent-A-Car and Rent-A-Bike operators.
Goa has been witnessing a steep rise in accidents, majorly due to drunk driving and over speeding, especially in the late hours of the night.
Addressing a press conference, SP Traffic Rahul Gupta IPS said that it will now be mandatory to sign an undertaking on traffic rules from any person renting out a car and bike from agents.
“We have now come out with agreement with 10 points which both different for rent-A-car and bikes. Tourists renting out cars and bikes will have to go through these points and sign,” said Gupta
He further said that one copy of the agreement will be given to the consumer which he or she has to compulsory keep with them while travelling.
“Major cause of accidents is that tourists are not aware of the topography of Goa. There will also be random checks with agents if the new directives are being followed or not,” he added.
Speaking further, SP said that some of the points in the agreement are that he or she will not allow anyone else to drive this vehicle if they don’t have a driving license. (Punished u/s 181 of MV act with penalty Rs 5000/-).
Another directive is that he or she will not drive the Car under the influence of Alcohol (punishable u/s 185 of M.V. Act with a minimum fine of Rs. 10,000/-, which will be decided by the Court or with Six Months imprisonment or with both).
“Accidents are on the rise, resulting in the deaths of many individuals. To prevent this from escalating any further, the Goa traffic cell, and the district police, will jointly undertake a special night drive, targeting traffic violators and drunk drivers with strict penalties.,” said SP.
