PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has asked hotels to only employ people with a labour card issued by the labour department.
The directions were issued in view of a rape attempt made on a Dutch woman by hotel staff at Mandrem Hotel.
The incident happened on the intervening night of march 29-30 in Pernem.
“I urge hotels not to employ anyone who does not possess a labour card issued by the labour department. This card is very important,” said CM Sawant.
He further said that staff member Abhishek Verma had been arrested for stabbing and molesting a Dutch tourist and also stabbing another person who went to help the tourist.
In recent months there have been incidents in the beach state where tourists have come under attack by hotel staff and locals. Incidents of foreign tourists being robbed have also surfaced recently.
In one incident, a family from Delhi had alleged that they were assaulted with knives, sticks and stones by the staff of the resort they were staying in after an altercation that started over a staffer telling one of the tourists not to smoke there.
Just days later, two tourists from Maharashtra were attacked by two local men over an incident of road rage.
