PORVORIM: Minister Subhash Phaldessai today said that Rivona land is very much suitable for IIT Goa project.
Phaldesai was speaking on the sidelines of Purple Fest press conference in Porvorim.
“The selection committee has visited and inspected and they have reviewed the progress of IIT. They found the Rivona land is very much feasible for IIT project and they will come out with the approval,” said Phaldesai.
He further said that a written approval is awaited but they have said that it’s the best place for an IIT.
Director of IIT Goa, Prof BK Mishra, said that the proposal is presently before the highest authority in the central government awaiting approval.
The Goa government has identified 10 lakh square metre land at Rivona for setting up the premier institute.
The expert committee of the Union Ministry of Education had visited the site in December 2023 and granted in-principle approval to the site.
It may be recalled that after facing strong opposition at three places, the Goa government has identified the particular land at Rivona
The IIT campus was allotted to Goa in 2016. Currently, IIT Goa is housed in the Goa Engineering College Complex at Farmagudi, Ponda.
First, the state government had identified a land in November 2015 on the Bhagwati plateau at Loliem-Pollem in Canacona taluka. However, the locals strongly opposed the proposed site citing various reasons.
