PANAJI: Rohit Monserrate and Vasant Agshikar on Friday submitted their nominations for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), with the election scheduled for March 30.
Speaking after filing his nomination, Monserrate described the upcoming vote as largely procedural and expressed gratitude for the chance to serve the city again. He said he and his team were thankful for the confidence reposed in them.
Monserrate also hinted that his tenure as Mayor may be short-lived, as he is expected to contest the forthcoming Assembly elections. He said he would hold the position only briefly and that the party leadership would decide the constituency from which he would contest.
Despite his future political plans, Monserrate said his immediate attention would remain on civic administration in Panaji. He stated that several commitments made during the campaign would be taken up on priority, adding that a list of multiple works is planned to be completed within the next six months.
On governance, he emphasised that assistance would be extended to all citizens irrespective of political affiliation. He said public representatives must ensure services reach everyone without discrimination.
Addressing preparations ahead of the monsoon, Monserrate said desilting operations have already begun and that flooding in vulnerable areas has been reduced over the years. He expressed confidence that similar measures this year would help prevent waterlogging.
Commenting on infrastructure works, he said most Smart City projects have been completed, while remaining deficiencies are being addressed. Contractors have been instructed to rectify issues and complete works according to specifications, he added, noting that pending commissioning work in Ribandar is also being pursued.
Monserrate also voiced opposition to fresh excavation of newly laid roads for utility works such as gas pipelines, stating that such planning should have been done earlier to avoid inconvenience.
On traffic and parking management, he said efforts would focus on improving enforcement and addressing staff shortages. A plan is being prepared to streamline parking and ease congestion in the city, he added.
Responding to concerns regarding casinos, Monserrate acknowledged their contribution to employment but admitted that certain areas face traffic and behavioural issues. He said the administration would work gradually to minimise these problems over time.
